The Naming of Parts

It begins to resemble what it will be. I went through the plans while sorting through some of the pre-cut wood.

With apologies to Henry Reed, today we have naming of parts. These are the sheer clamps, by which the deck is attached to the hull, and these are the bulkheads by which flotation is maintained in the event of flooding or capsize. This is the foredeck, which sits at the rower’s back, and this is the after deck which the rower faces while sculling backwards through the world. These are pieces of the splash box, which increases the freeboard of the shell, lest the bulkheads come into play… Etc.

Here are all three sections of Henry Reed’s “Lessons of the War.” The first section is justly famous on its own.

The epoxy portion of the recommended kit (Chesapeake Light Craft, MAS Economy Kit #1) is on the way direct from MAS Epoxies (1 gallon marine resin, 1/2 gallon slow, non-blushing hardener). I went with the direct route because I already had the thickening agents and a few other items included in the kit and because shipping from CLC was going to run to about 25% of the order. Shipping came to just $7 from MAS and would have been free if I had paid attention to my coupons (next time, maybe for tabletop epoxy, maybe for more boat stuff).

I will need to make some fillet-shaping tools, maybe find bags (“piping bags” or heavy freezer bags — Google this) for distributing thickened epoxy, and some nitrile gloves, also some appropriate alcohol for neatening fillets. The “glue” part of “stitch and glue” should be here in 6-7 days. (For the ledger: $185)
